Don't stare at your hands while you're playing.
It's just that simple.
Seriously, when you focus on your hands, you're inviting too much thinking, and thinking just can't keep up with the music. To really play, you need to be in the moment, feeling and hearing everything as it happens. That's where the magic, and ease, come in. It's that direct, effortless ease that builds your confidence as a musician.
Now, don't get me wrong—you'll need to think and glance at your hands now and then. It's natural, especially when you feel unsure about your memorization or technique, or when the stage lights feel a bit too intense. But if you focus too much on your hands, you start analyzing, and that's when worry creeps in.
When you stop relying so much on sight, you begin to trust your muscle memory. This lets you truly listen to what you're playing. Feeling and listening are instant, way more accurate and direct than just looking. You end up feeling more connected to your instrument.
Try practicing standing with a strap and looking away as much as you can. With some training and a bit of courage, you'll build confidence and stage presence in no time.
Cheers!
